Reporting a Fire
Do not assume a fire has been reported. Many times people think "somebody must have reported it" and they have not. Multiple reports provide more details and often allow the fire department to upgrade its response.
If it is safe to do so remain near your phone or home. The fire department may need to call you or send an engine to you to see what you see. Tell the dispatcher where the fire is and where you are. Be clear and concise. The information you provide is critical in getting the right equipment to the right place.
Accurate, timely information can help firefighters save lives and property. Be prepared to give the following information when you report a fire:
- Location you are calling from
- Location of the fire
- Type of fire (i.e.: house, building, car, brush, etc.)
- Color of smoke - white, black, gray?
- Can you see flames? If so - how big.
- If the burning building is occupied
- Any known hazards
- Your identity
